BK9103总线耦合器将PROFINET RT与模块化、可扩展的电子接线端子连接起来。一个单元由一个总线耦合器、1到64个端子（255个带K总线扩展）和一个端部端子组成。
总线耦合器识别它们所连接的端子，并自动将输入和输出分配给过程图像的单词。BK9103总线耦合器支持10 Mbit/s和100 Mbit/s以太网。通过普通RJ45连接器连接。IP地址在DIP开关上设置（偏移到可自由选择的起始地址）。在具有DHCP（用于将逻辑IP地址分配给物理节点地址[MAC-ID]的服务）的网络中，总线耦合器从DHCP服务器获得其IP地址。
BK9103包含一个3端口交换机。两个端口在RJ45连接器上进行外部操作，可以使用。因此，I/O站可以配置为线路拓扑，而不是经典的星形拓扑。在许多应用中，这大大减少了布线工作量和布线成本。两个耦合器之间的zui大距离为100米。多达20个BK9103总线耦合器是可级联的，因此可以实现2公里的线路长度。
PROFINET是PNO（PROFIBUS Nutzerorganization）的开放式工业以太网标准。TCP/IP等国际公认的IT标准用于通信。PROFINET RT描述了控制器和现场设备之间的数据交换，可用于标准以太网。商用交换机用于网络目的。
